8 casks… I was worried that the drink would not be focused enough to hit any one note too well but I came away pleasantly surprised. Probably the best NAS released by Macallan since the abysmal 1824 line came to be. Finally a higher proof Macallan!
Paid: $95 for 750ml
Distilled / Owned By: Macallan / Edrington Group
Mashbill: 100% malted barley
Aged For: NAS
Cask Type: First-fill casks to include: Tevasa Butts; Toneleria Hudo Butts; Vasyma Puncheons; J&M Martin Butts; Gonzalez Byass Butts; and Tevasa Puncheons. The Second Fill casks were: sherry hogsheads and sherry butts
Chill Filtered: Yes
Color Added: No
Drank: Neat, in a glencairn
Color: Cinnamon Bronze Brown
Nose: The first thing I pick up is hints of sandalwood, then sweet brown sugar syrup. Leathery honey and oak.
Taste: Excellent feel upon hitting the palate, rich vanilla custard and almonds coat the mouth. Oak. Oak. Oak.
Finish: Long lasting and good warmth, dried orange slices and caramel toffee with even more oak.
Overall: I bought this when it came out and can’t believe it’s over $500 on some of the auction websites. It’s a lovely expression that is uniquely Macallan while having a thick oak profile that a bourbon lover would enjoy.
Score: 93 out of 100
