I received this as a Christmas gift last year from my wife who knows I am a big fan of the 12 year. I always wanted a bottle but could never justify the price tag when I had so many other things I wanted to try.
Paid: $240 for 750ml
Distilled / Owned By: Macallan / Edrington Group
Aged For: 18 years, distilled 1997, bottled 2015
Mashbill: 100% malted barley
Cask Type: Oloroso Sherry
Chill Filtered: Yes
Color Added: No
Drank: Neat, in a glencairn
Color: Copper Mahogany
Nose: Toffee and caramel. Sherry with dried fruits, raisin, chocolate and vanilla mingle with orange peel.
Taste: The palate is not as good as the nose, a bit blander but hitting the same notes. A bit of ginger works its way into the taste. Not watery but not oily either.
Finish: Citrus and sherry with touches of vanilla oak. Very warm and complex on the finish.
Overall: I found that I really enjoyed the nose and finish on the 18 but felt the relatively bland palate and mouthfeel bring the experience down. The 18 is more complex and refined then the 12 year, however it in no way justifies the insane jump in price.
