Nose: Honey, floral, malt, apples, custard, and fresh cut hay

Mouthfeel: Light bodied

Palate/Taste: Vanilla, honey, malt, oak, cream, and white pepper

Finish: Light warmth and medium length vanilla with a punch of pepper, orchard fruits and honey

Thoughts: I’m not the biggest fan of Glenmorangie, but this is a huge leap in taste for me from their 10 and 12 year malts. It’s a simple highlander that is sure to be a crowd pleaser.

Color: Straw

Drank: Neat, in a glencairn

Nose: Clove and spice with vanilla, honey, bread crust, pears, and oak

Feel:Light to medium body

Taste: Vanilla, malt, pepper, oak, leather, clove, and cinnamon

Finish: Malt, chocolate, slightly dry, oak, light to medium warmth, medium length, herbal at the very end

Thoughts: I like the flavors imparted by the rye casks to Glenmorangie’s malt, but this could have been amazing at Cask Strength with and age statement.

Glenmorangie Signet

Glenmorangie Signet

Price: $209.99 for 750ml

Distilled/Owned by: Glenmorangie / LVMH

Region: Highland

46% ABV

Aged For: NAS, I read that older vattings were majority 30 years and up, but I find that doubtful.

Mashbill: 100% malted barley, uses high roasted chocolate malt

Cask Type: Ex-bourbon, sherry, wine, virgin oak, and others

Chill Filtered: No

Color Added: Possibly

Drank: Neat, in a glencairn

Color: Dark copper

Nose: Dried fruit, orange peel, raisin, vanilla, hazelnut and chocolate porter.

Taste: Disappointingly watery. Milk chocolate dominates. Honey, malted barley, citrus and sherry.

Finish: Short and gentle. More malt and honey. Bit of berry and oak.

Thoughts: Tap the breaks on the hype train because there’s no way this is as good as the reviews let on. For the price the watery palate and weak finish are unacceptable. The flavors are pleasant, but this is a $75 dollar bottle being peddled as a $200 + one.

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban

Glenmorangie Quinta Ruban

This is the last of the core range I needed to review. While none of them were bad scotches most of them have not really grabbed me.

Paid: $40 for Glenmorangie 4 pack

Region: Highland

46% ABV

Mashbill: 100% malted barley

Cask Type: Ex-bourbon, finished in port casks

Chill Filtered: No

Drank: Neat, in a glencairn

Color: Brownish Orange

Nose: I can certainly detect a wine like smell of what I would assume to be a tawny port. Dried fruits, apricot and a douse of powdered sugar.

Taste: Vanilla, raisins, maybe pecan? More wine taste with flicks of yeasty cherry.

Finish: Warm and medium in length. Again a lot of fruitiness with orange peel and a dab of ginger.

Overall: I think this is the most balanced of the Glenmorangie range that I tried and I certainly enjoyed it the most. It was very fruity and yeasty, and not fruity in the sherry way that I am normally used to. If I had to choose a Glenmorangie from the core line it would be this.

Color: Straw Gold

Nose: Gentle honey and floral aromas compose the majority of the nose. Light inklings of fruit.

Taste: Very light, honey and lemon citrus. Just a tad oily in the mouth with essence of grape. (Almost wine or mead like actually)

Finish: Even more lemon comes out in the finish with more citrus, of medium in length.

Overall: As I said, this is a nice light scotch that I find preferable to the more major brands. This is what Dalwhinnie would taste like if I didn’t hate it.

Color: Wheat Gold

Nose: Butterscotch and coconut with dollops of vanilla. Honey is present throughout.

Taste: The nose follows through to the palate with velvety butterscotch, honey and vanilla.

Finish: Ginger now comes out and overpowers the sweet desert like profile for me. Too spicy for what this is supposed to be.

Overall: The nose and taste of this is great, but the finish does as 180 for me and leaves much to be desired.

Score: 72/100

Color: Autumn Brown

Nose: Sherry and dried fruits come off first, followed by figs and slivers of black currant.

Taste: A bite of sherry to quickly replaced by oak. Raisins and dates are the main mouthful with a linger of black cherry.

Finish: Slightly warm with sherry influence a welcome reappearance. Much to short.

Overall: I really wanted to love this one, but it comes off as an average scotch to me. More time aging or more time in sherry casks would have helped it I think. I also am aware I sampled the lower proof version and the previous was 46%, that too may have helped this rise above average.

Score: 72/100
