Color: Golden

Drank: Neat, in a glencairn.

Nose: Gentle smoke, vanilla, oak, barley sugar, a bit of earth and salt with a peach undertone.

Mouthfeel: Medium body

Palate/Taste: Pepper, smoke, wood char, toasted nuts, honey, and apricot.

Finish: Buttery, with a medium warmth and finish. Peat smoke and melon slices.

Thoughts: This was a blind sample compared with the Caol Ila distillers edition I recently had I much prefer this (I think Laga got the muscatel casks from Caol Ila actually). The muscatel cask influence is very muted, but pure uncut Laga is a decent malt in its own right.

Score: 83 out of 100

Color: White wine

Drank: Neat, in a glencairn.

Nose: Mossy peat, salt, vanilla, soap. Leather, citrus, olives

Mouthfeel: Oily

Palate/Taste: Smoke, citrus, vanilla, sweet brine, sugar, honey, pepper, and slight creaminess

Finish: Dry and wet at the same time, oak, pepper, salt, and creamy vanilla, medium warmth and length.

Thoughts: It’s not as raw as the 8 year, but it’s the purest expression I can think of Laga compared to the 16.

Score: 83 out of 100

Color: Almost clear, off white

Drank: Neat, in a glencairn.

Nose: Buttery, gentle smoke, vanilla, tar, biscuits, heather.

Mouthfeel: Intermediate

Palate/Taste: Stronger smoke, and buttery vanilla. Peat, touch of herbs and ginger with pepper

Finish: Warm, medium length, smoke and oak, vanilla.

Thoughts: Gentle smoke and a buttery vanilla are the themes here for me, not a bad younger malt.

Score: 80 out of 100

Color: Straight Copper

Nose: Peat and Salt. Noticeably less medicinal than the other Islay drams. Smokey and damp.

Taste: More smokey peat and sea salt. Lightly oaked and flicks of candied orange. Clove maybe?

Finish: Medium to long with peppery bacon and ever present smoked peated barley.

Overall: A good drink in the signature Islay style. Overall I think I prefer the more medicinal side of peat, but that’s not to say this isn’t a solid whisky.

Score: 84/100
