Joseph Magnus Single Barrel PX Cask

Joseph Magnus PX Cask

Price: $140 for 750ml

Distilled/Owned by: MGP / Joseph Magnus

Region: Indiana / DC

49.55% ABV

Mashbill: Undisclosed

Aged For: NAS

Cask Type: New charred oak, finished in PX Sherry casks

Chill Filtered: No

Color: Copper

Drank: Neat, in a glencairn.

Nose: Apples, peaches, corn mash, caramel, citrus, oak, and light toffee

Mouthfeel: Medium body and syrupy

Palate/Taste: Sherry, pepper, oak, leather, jamy fruit, chocolate, and coffee

Finish: Medium warmth and long lasting, PX sherry with leathery cinnamon

Thoughts: A nice change up of the usual bourbon notes, with fruit front and center, and the texture taking on some of the syrupy feel from the PX. That said I’d rate this about the same as the regular Magnus release.

Nose: Rye spices, oak, caramel, pepper, cloves, and coffee (No MGP dill here)

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and dry

Palate/Taste: Rye, mint, pepper, oak, toffee, and herbs

Finish: Medium warmth and length. Rye and herbs with bourbon oak and bitter chocolate

Thoughts: The ex-bourbon casks mellow the RR out a bit, but if you are not a fan of the herbal dill profile of MGP they tone that down as well. Good, but not great.

Belle Meade Sherry Finish

Belle Meade Sherry

Price: $75 for 750ml

Distilled/Owned by: MGP / Belle Meade

Region: America

Color: Tawny

Drank: Neat, in a glencairn.

Nose: Musty fruit, vanilla, cherries, the syrup that comes from canned peaches, cola

Mouthfeel: Light-medium body

Palate/Taste: Cherries, butter, coffee, vanilla, grape jelly, oak.

Finish: Shorter in length and light warmth. Fruit cocktail, cherry soda, oak, and caramel

Thoughts: The sherry cask for me dominated the bourbon, I wanted more spicy MGP notes and a bit more dryness on the palate. I didn’t get any of the herbal notes from the MGP rye in the mash either.

George Dickel Rye

George Dickel Rye

Mouthfeel: Light bodied

Palate/Taste: Mellow rye, slight dill, pepper, clove, and liquorice

Thoughts: It’s a young MGP rye with some charcoal filtering influence. If MGP rye is your thing, this is cheap and pretty available.
