Mount Gay XO

Mount Gay XO

Region: Barbados

43% ABV

Distillate: Molasses

Aged For: NAS, claims average around 8-10 years

Color: Tawny

Drank: Neat, in a glencairn

Nose: Molasses, oak, coffee, Caramel, tannins, and sugar

Mouthfeel: Light bodied

Palate/Taste: Bright molasses, followed by oaky tannins, toffee, and cigar tobacco

Finish: Medium warmth and length, Oaky and drying, molasses, brown sugar, bourbon

Thoughts: Very straightforward Bajan rum, it’s actually a bit boring to be honest, but as any easy to find aged rum it’s better than many of it’s dosed competitors in the same price bracket.

Foursquare Dominus

Foursquare Dominus

Price: $75 for 750ml

Distilled/Owned by: Foursquare

Region: Barbados

56% ABV

Distillate: Molasses

Aged For: 10 Years

Cask Type: Ex-bourbon and ex-cognac

Chill Filtered: No

Additives used: No

Color: Amber

Drank: Neat, in a glencairn

Nose: Heavy ginger, dried fruits, floral cognac, tangy molasses, oak, and cloves

Mouthfeel: Full bodied and oily

Palate/Taste: Rich tropical fruits, molasses, cognac, caramel, marzipan, white raisins

Finish: Warm, medium length, citrusy, coffee, oak, bourbon cream, Riesling, demenera sugar

Thoughts: Unlike the Foursquare Citerion which didn’t show much of the wine cask influence I can clearly tell the cognac influence on this. I don’t think it was better than last year’s zinfandel cask though, especially for the rarity and price.

Color: Deep Copper

Drank: Neat, in a glencairn

Nose: Oak, chilies, cinnamon, tobacco, ginger, molasses, salt

Mouthfeel: Medium, dry

Palate/Taste: Cigar tobacco, oak, clove, pepper, leather, coconut, pineapple citrus

Finish: Warm, and long lasting, oak, citrus, tropical fruit, pepper, brown sugar

Thoughts: This had a lot more spice than I was expecting, but I don’t think the Madeira casks make this much better than the regular 2004 cask strength bottling. Still this is a good rum.

Color: Tarnished gold

Drank: Neat, in a glencairn

Nose: Coconuts and demenara sugar, honey, charred oak, vanilla

Mouthfeel: Medium body

Palate/Taste: Vanilla, pepper, oak, baking spices, molasses, banana

Finish: Light to medium warmth, medium length, Oak and cinnamon with ginger, molasses and vanilla

Thoughts: From what I have found about the store picks, is that the store choses the blends of rums that go into the bottle, so depending on who does the selection this could be very hit or miss. I am a huge bourbon drinker, so the strong bourbon flavors from this are very much to my palate.
