Palate/Taste: Leather, pepper, oak, chili, green pepper, molasses, toasted mango

Finish: Dry and warm, long finish. Earthy with a bit of tar. Oak, pepper, peach, and mango

Thoughts: This is one of the most unique rums I have tried and the flavors really go all over the place without feeling disjointed or random. A big contrast with how spicy it is compared to the sweet El Dorados that are more readily available.

El Dorado 12

El Dorado 12

Paid: $25 for 750ml

Distilled/Owned by: Demerara Distillers

Region: Guyana

40% ABV

Distillate: Molasses

Aged For: 12 Years

Cask Type: Ex-bourbon

Chill Filtered: Yes?

Additives used: Sugar added

Color: Chestnut orange

Drank: Neat, in a glencairn

Nose: Sweet syrup, molasses, vanilla, citrus, raisins, brown sugar, tropical fruit

Mouthfeel: Light bodied

Palate/Taste: Maple syrup, vanilla, brown sugar, oak, oranges, sherry, molasses, coconut

Finish: Light warmth and short, caramel, coconut, vanilla, and brown sugar

Thoughts: I compare this with Diplomatica Reserva as they are both sweetened rums, but I like the El Dorado a bit more. That said, as I explore more rum I am finding the sweetness to be just too much and can only have it in small amounts. When I am in the mood I do enjoy it though.

Distilled/Owned by: Demerara Distillers

Region: Guyana

40% ABV

Distillate: Molasses

Aged For: NAS

Cask Type: Not stated

Color: Clear

Drank: Neat, in a glencairn.

Nose: Alcohol, grass, sugar crystals, eucalyptus

Mouthfeel: Light bodied

Palate/Taste: Sugar, sweet vanilla, clean, grassy

Finish: Short and gentle with a sugar crystal and cane juice flavor

Thoughts: I know it’s not meant to be drank straight, but I’m not a big fan of mixed drinks. I keep this more on hand for guests to mix drinks for, and to that end it works well and that’s how I’m going to score it.
